Why Teach?
Why Teach?
I feel like every future teacher gets the question why do you even want to teach? Are you sure you can handle being around 20-30 kids for 7 hours of the day? It's difficult to be in charge of so many kids do you think you can handle it? Well, when I first got these questions thrown at me, I thought there is no way I could possibly do that to myself. I have grown up watching my mom be a teacher and now my sister is one too, so after seeing what they have to do and hearing all these questions about how hard it is I told myself I would never go into this profession, and I would just do business or real estate instead... However, that obviously did not happen, or I wouldn't be in this class writing my blog post. My teacher journey is because of one kid I met my senior year of high school. I needed some extra cash and I have always been good at English in school so when my mom heard one of her 4th grade students wanted some extra help in English, she sent me his way. This poor kid knew absolutely nothing. He was struggling to read at a 2nd grade level, and he was in the 4th... At first, I was struggling with this boy because it was so hard for me to sit with him 3x a week and watch him struggle so much. However, when a few weeks went by and he really started to show some progress, I have never felt prouder of anything in my life. This kid who knew nothing about reading and struggled to even write his name has now made so much progress. He was excited to learn and excited to meet every week and go over homework and read stories I had picked for us. I soon realized I did not belong in the business or real estate world and my calling was teaching. Watching his eyes light up when he would get something right and his brain making connections it hadn't before brought me a joy I had not felt in my life. It truly is something when kids can figure things out and you were the one guiding them to the solutions. Watching this child go from a timid and shy boy to a confident and excited student made me want to impact more kids in this world.
Educational Aims?
I am currently an early elementary education major so I would be happy teaching anything in the elementary schools. Specifically, I would love to teach 2nd-4th grade. I currently work after school care in San Marcos ISD, and I have been working with the 3rd-4th grade groups and I love that age. They're old enough to joke around with but still innocent enough to be naive towards world. I'm from the DFW area more specifically Fort Worth so I wouldn't mind being in a school district up there. I have enjoyed San Marcos ISD and the school I'm at is awesome so anywhere I end up I will adapt and be okay with.
I currently do not have TikTok, so I am not familiar with any teachers on TikTok, but I am currently obsessed with Abott Elementary. I binged all of season 1 last week and now I am caught up with season 2. I love how Melissa runs her classroom and I could totally see myself being like her. She is a little rough around the edges but would do anything for her students. She is also Italian, and I am Italian, so it is even funnier how she acts because that is how every Italian woman acts. Anyways, highly recommend Abott Elementary. Not only is it a funny show from the teacher's perspective it shows the adversity teachers face in this profession especially in tidal 1 school with little to no support.
“We care so much we refuse to burn out. If we burn out who’s here for the kids?”
– Melissa (Abott Elementary)
Hi and welcome to you, Ella! What a beautiful treat is was for me to read your story about the boy you tutored. Beautiful. Thank you for that. I like that show too.
